We are indebted to Barry Mitchell for this piece on ageing motorists. No doubt that this will be of interest, not only to members, but also to their family and friends

PROBUS DRIVERS BE AWARE.

A recent TV programme highlighted issues facing drivers over the age of seventy. Having reached that milestone one has to renew the licence with DVLA every three years.

The questions asked on renewal cover a spectrum of medical issues that one may suffer from. Of major importance is that on renewal is the applicant able to read a car number plate from a distance of 20 metres.

Highlighting this the programme showed that random roadside checks re the 20 metre rule are actively being made by the police. If one fails to meet this requirement the DVLA are notified by the police and sadly your licence is immediately revoked until such times as your it is proven that your vision has improved to meet the 20 metre threshold.

On viewing the TV programme your writer made arrangements for an eye test that happily showed that he was just able to meet the 20 metre rule. Regardless, as a safeguard to cover the next three year licence period, he ordered specs with added distance vision.

As the majority of Burlington Probus members are drivers and in the 70 years of age bracket I wish to make them well aware that these random checks are ongoing.

On Thursday evening committee members and their partners enjoyed a meal at Archers, the restaurant attached to Bridlington College.

A super three course meal was cooked and served by college students who all did a terrific job including manning the bar.

All who attended enjoyed the food, wine and the attention from the very enthusiastic "staff". The variable menu was very reasonably priced and given sufficient notice we can arrange an individual menu for our events.

Since the closure of the Expanse hotel we have been looking at possible alternatives for our events throughout the year and we are sure that Archers will meet with the approval of members and guests.

YORKSHIRE WOLDS RAILWAY

WE WERE TREATED TO A FASCINATING TALK BY VOLUNTEERS FROM THE YORKSHIRE WOLDS RAILWAY. I AM SURE CHRIS WILL BE DOING A FULL REPORT, BUT IN THE MEANTIME, IF ANYONE IS INTERESTED IN GOING, THE CONTACT DETAILS ARE SHOWN BELOW.

At our most recent meeting on Tuesday we were treated to another talk from the lovely Linda McCarthy. Linda has visited us on more than one occasion previously and always picks an interesting topic which she backs up with informative and colourful displays.

This time the title of her talk was "How Dickens Made Christmas"

As ever she filled her talk with anecdotes and humour and the members present agreed that it was fascinating.

Linda has other talks on several subjects and we look forward to having her back again.

Chris has circulated this information to members by email but I thought it would be helpful if we featured it on our website.Looks like a great series of days out for all those interested in classic cars of all types. Members and their guests attended the clubs annual 2026 Spring Lunch at the North Star Hotel in Flamborough on Tuesday

A delightful three course meal was served and all agreed that the food and service were excellent. The dessert trolley alone made the trip worthwhile!!

Stewart and Margaret Mitchell presided over a seemingly endless raffle with prizes for ten of the attendees

Our thanks go to them and to Chris Fairweather for organising the event.

Sorry but we didnt take any photos of the merrymakers.

The U3A Event

The Annual U3A Event was held at The Spa on Monday.

Our stand was manned by Chris Langley, Jim Hornsby, John Ford and Mike Gold.

Visitors showed considerable interest in our club and we hope that it will produce some new members.

We had a chance to chat with the Mayor of Bridlington, Counc. Angela Walker who kindly agreed to pose for some photographs.

Burlington Probus AGM

Burlington Probus held its annual general meeting yesterday. A minutes silence was held in memory of two members who had passed away during the year.

The Chairman and committee would like to thank all those who attended.

He also thanked the other members of the committee for their hard work and support during his year in the chair

The principal officers tended their respective reports and these are now available to view on the "Members" page of this website.

The meeting unanimously elected Jim Hornsby as the Chairman for 2026/7.

No Vice Chairman has yet been appointed

The remaining officers confirmed their willingness to continue in their respective roles. There were no challenges. and therefore the committee remains unchanged.

A number of matter were discussed and are reflected in the official minutes which are also on the "members" page.

The Chairman handed the chain of office to Jim Hornsby who received a round of applause.

Annual Charity Fund Presentation 2026.

Chairman Jim and Secretary Chris had the pleasant task of presenting the Club’s latest collection effort to The Bridlington Crew of the RNLI at the Lifeboat Station.

They were made very welcome to the Station by Volunteer Bob Taylor and given a brief history of the Boat. The cheque was handed to Bob who stressed the importance of every penny raised to their efforts.

The collection is the result of members giving up their loose change at every Club Meeting and Committee Meetings. This year’s effort raised £250.
